Camilo Losada
Resume
Camilo is a contemporary keyboardist influenced by the Afro Cuban music and American jazz. He became a salsa music pianist when he started actively listening to and understanding the language of Afro-Caribbean music. He fell in love with piano solos and tumbaos, the musical heritage of Cuba.
Camilo got started in music with guitar and percussion, he has a degree in music education (pedagogy) and always enjoys teaching, because for him, “teaching is the best way to learn about what you are doing, in order to master it.” He also says: “Students always have very interesting questions that encourage you to carry on learning and researching about what you are doing, it´s very interesting seeing student´s progress when they are motivated”.
Camilo has played as a pianist in several salsa music orchestras, mastering Caribbean rhythms such a son, cha cha cha, bolero, guaguanco and many others. He thinks piano is very important in a band because it provides rhythm, harmony and melody, so piano is a rhythmic, harmonic and melodic instrument. Camilo´s back ground comes from different styles like jazz, classic, rock and blues. He says every musician should be a percussionist, because percussion is about internal rhythm, like a motor which pushes us through time.
In Australia he is a member of Ron Bay, a salsa band located in the Byron Bay area, playing keyboards. “Every gig, every rehearsal, every note is such an importance because we always learn something new about the experience”, he says.
Through years of practice he has development his own style of improvisation. He thinks everyone can learn about improvising, “what you need is just to be confident in yourself”, “just believe it”.
