I treat my camera as an artist would with a palette of colours and a blank canvas. The object for me is to create the visual image I seek in the camera at the moment I shoot it – not later by digital software.
To achieve this I have to break all the rules in photography. For example I move the camera instead of holding it still. I use slow shutter speeds unthinkable of in general photography. I photograph into the sun. I place objects in front of the lens.
I use everyday items such as Vaseline, hair spray, women’s stockings or Lip Gloss to create painterly effects.
The challenge is that the list is endless; for example I mix a bit of this and a bit of that on glass in front of the lens. Somehow I know, like the artist, what combination I need to make the shot of the subject as I see it.
