Behaviour and Response Training (BART) Work

Behaviour and Response Training (BART) works effectively and safely with adults in care who deal with challenging and high risk behaviours (Includes 'An Introduction to Self Protective Behaviour -SPB).

Challenging or concerning behaviour often occurs in response to a complex array of often interrelating factors and can include beahviour that leads to:

• an increase in staff frustration and decreased job satisfaction, impacting on staff retention.
• physical and/or psychological injury to staff and others
• costly in terms of staff injury, lost-time-injury and WorkCover/insurance involvement.
• a barrier to a clients ability to access care and services
• costly to organisations because it demands time and resources of staff on many levels.

This workshop is most suitable for staff who are required to provide care and support for adults in community or residential settings. Previously offered to Nurses, OT, Social Workers, Care Workers, Community Support Workers, Psychosocial and Disability support workers. This training provides participants with a framework which supports self-responsibility and a whole-of-organisation approach to the management of people who use challenging or concerning behaviours.

Self-Protective Behaviours (SPB) is a model developed by Andy Kelly which encourages staff to assume responsibility for their own safety from client/resident-related threat, aggression or violence in the workplace. This workshop provides staff opportunities to explore 'challenging behaviours' using real client case scenarios.

In this workshop, participants will;

• understand the meaning and implications of 'challenging behaviours
• explore the causes and maintenance factors of challenging behaviours
• understand the principles of Self Protective Behaviours.
• explore common client-related risk behaviours
• develop 5 R (research, Report, Record, Respond, Review) responses to 'challenging behaviours
• develop active strategies for working safely with individuals who use high risk 'challenging behaviours'
• assume self-responsibility for personal health and safety and risk management
• become clearer about Duty of Care and other responsibilities in reporting, recording and responding to 'challenging behaviours'.

Course Fees are fully subsidised for eligible students, a resource fee applies to all enrolments.

ACE Program Fee: $0* (plus resource fee of $50) - most NSW residents are eligible for this subsidised fee!
Full Fee: $135

To be eligible for government subsidised training through the ACE Program, you must:

Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, or a New Zealand; and
Live or work in New South Wales; and
Be aged 15 years or older;
No longer be at school or equivalent; and
Provide the College with your USI at the time of enrolment (admin staff can assist you in obtaining a USI);
