Come and learn about the alternative and underground world culture of Zines! What are zines? How do you zine?

A zine (pronounced zeen), as in maga-zine(!) is the artform known as self-published DIY journals and magazines combining mixed media, uncensored expression, homemade literature, and/or autobiographical elements. This class will teach the history of zines, their creative possibilities, and how to make your own zine!

Explore the limitless no-rules world of zines and self-publishing! And make your own zine in the process!

Traditionally confined to subcultures burgeoning underground ideas, alternative literature and cultural revolution, zines come in all shapes, sizes and subject matter. In recent times, zines have had a resurgence, evolving into a legitimate artform of contemporary journalism, life narrative, new media and tactile objects of art. This fun, creative and interactive course will gloss over the history of the medium, teach the basics of zine making, hone your creative thinking and practical art skills, and have you starting/selling your own publication in no time!

Zines can be about ANYTHING! From cookbooks to comics to political pamphlets to poetry collections to collages to ranking the best/worst ALDI wines... An ode to your favourite movie; a novella about your dog; a historical documentation of your last holiday. ANYTHING! There’s no limit and no rules in this exciting world of underground DIY publishing.

Facilitated by Benjo Kazue, long time zine maker, freelance writer, music journalist and founder of independent publishing house and DIY literary journal Cosmic Phallusy (shortlisted for The Broken Pencil International Zine Awards for Best Literature Zine and Best Overall Zine), come prepared to unlock your creative prowess and learn how to start your own literary or art journal/revolution.
