This introductory course covers the key skills you need for precious metal work; perfect for anyone who would like to start the journey of jewellery design and making.

Learn the fundamentals of jewellery making in silver such as sawing, filing, soldering, forming and polishing to achieve various textures and finishes. During the workshop, you will also gain an understanding of silver’s properties, as well as the equipment and tools used to work with this precious metal.

In class, you will design and make your own jewellery pieces, beginning with a simple silver ring and then making a hand-formed chain bracelet as a subsequent project. You can expect to complete two pieces of finished jewellery.

At the end of this course, you will go home with a foundation of knowledge and skills of basic jewellery making as well as your ready-to-wear silver jewellery pieces.

What to bring

  • Pencil, paper and scissors
  • $90 to tutor at first class for materials
  • Wear closed-in shoes, no loose clothing and tie up long hair
  • Bring your own lunch
  • Students need to be healthy and fit as a degree of hand strength and steadiness are required in silversmithing.
