Visit a thriving urban food garden. So, you are interested in growing your own backyard fruit and veggies, maybe incorporating a couple of chooks. You know a bit about it, and really want to get into it, but would love to see how someone else is actually managing it, warts and all. Spend a morning having a good old sticky-beak at Heather’s small kitchen garden. Wander around, ask questions, and get some great advice and ideas for your own food-based garden.

Loads of wonderful technical information is available to people who want to learn to grow their own food, but often the biggest questions are the practical ones.

  • How much food can you actually produce on an urban block?
  • How do you grow fruit trees in such a small area?
  • How do you organise your space? How much work is really involved?
  • What does “growing your own food” actually look like in a small, urban, garden?
  • What are the triumphs?
  • What are the tragedies?

This Open Garden visit is designed to offer simple, practical, answers to those questions, and to give budding backyard food growers a chance to experience the real thing.

Heather currently lives on a very small, urban, block in the heart of Mullumbimby. This latest garden of hers is still young, but her system of continuous polyculture already provides nearly all the organic veg for her family all year round, as well as allowing her to harvest berries and fruit from over a dozen trees. She integrates her small flock of chooks and ducks into her garden as part of an entire, holistic, food-producing, eco-system.
