This course will introduce you to a range of fundamental drawing skills that form the foundation of the drawing process. A variety of drawing methods and materials will be covered, from traditional drawing techniques and media to experimental approaches. The main emphasis will be on drawing what you see. In class demonstrations and structured guidance will support you to gain the confidence for observational and expressive drawing. This course is suitable for beginners or for those wishing to renew their interest in drawing.

The tutor will bring a folio of her own drawings and art books to illustrate a wide range of drawing styles.

  • Introduction to a range of drawing materials, including graphite, pastel and felt pen
  • Fundamental skills of observing and drawing light/dark, positive and negative space, contours, proportion
  • Introduction to various drawing techniques

Learning Outcomes

  • Practical experience of different ways to approach drawing
  • How to observe subject matter accurately, and in turn draw what is seen
  • Insights into the way artists see and draw their subjects
  • Explored ways to be creative with your approach to drawing

What to bring

Please bring the following to the first class. There will be additional materials to bring
to following classes, and this will be discussed in the first session. Materials to the
approx. value of $25 need to be bought prior to the first class.

  • 4B and 6B pencil( Mars Lumograph are recommended)
  • 10 sheets of A4 paper, can be recycled paper, one side must be blank.
  • A small object that fits into the palm of your hand (can be anything….key ring, mini torch, shell, feather, flower etc.
  • 2 sheets of A2 cartridge paper 120 gsm
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Vinyl eraser (this is the standard eraser most of us use)
  • Note book and pen
  • Rag to clean hands
  • Mug
  • Please bring your own lunch
