The role of the community service worker is to advocate for people to significantly improve their quality of life, create solutions and programs to address community needs and provide information and support. A career in community services gives you a purpose in life, knowing that you are supporting people to get their lives back on track.  

There are many career paths within community services, including; housing and homelessness, working with ageing adults, disability program coordination, youth work, drug and alcohol services, domestic and family violence support and counselling, refugee programs, employment and training and many more.

You will learn how to:

• Use communication to build relationships
• Facilitate the interests and rights of clients
• Work within a community development framework
• Strategies to assess unmet and co-existing needs of clients 
• Work legally and ethically
• Work with people with mental health issues, disabilities and young people
• Provide advocacy and representation services
• Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships

You will be guided by our highly skilled, industry current trainer who will help you develop the personal and professional skills required to start your career as a community services worker.  

This nationally recognised course includes a minimum of 40 hours work placement, where you will be provided the opportunity to practice your community service skills and develop relationships with local organisations, opening doors to a variety of roles, such as: Community Support Worker, Welfare Officer, Case Manager, Family Support Worker, Youth Worker and Service / Program Coordinator.  

The Certificate IV training course is an opportunity to create a new career path or strengthen your skills if you're already in the sector. The course allows you to explore several areas before focusing on the one area you may be passionate about.  

This course is being offered as a subsidised course to eligible students under the Smart and Skilled program. Applications for these subsidised places are limited so a funded place cannot be guaranteed.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

Admission / Desirable Requirements

When studying with Byron Community College, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to ensure you have the pre-existing knowledge and skills required to complete your qualification. This course involves reading and undertaking a range of written assessments. Work Placement

You are required to complete 40 hours of work placement in the community services industry that formally contributes to the assessment process. This includes the need to collect and use information from the work placement as part of your overall assessment. Work placement is mandatory and an assessable component of the course. The college will assist you to arrange work placement, including providing a list of local facilities who take on students regularly to complete their work placement. Students are required to communicate with the college and tutor prior to undertaking any contact with work placement facilities.

Course Duration & Hours

• Assessments will be completed in an online format
• Rolling enrolments - First intake Tuesday 6th February 2024
• 2 days of face-to-face onsite learning per week, 9:00am – 4:00pm, Tuesday & Thursday
• 1 day structured at home study per week, 9:00am – 4:00pm, Wednesday
• 1 day structured at home study per week, flexible
• 40 hours work placement from Term 4 (refer Work Placement section)
• Delivery location: Mullumbimby Campus

Course Fees

The fee below applies to all eligible Smart and Skilled students:

Smart and Skilled NSW Fee Free initiative - $0

To be eligible for Smart and Skilled government subsidised training, you must:

• Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, or a New Zealand citizen; and
• Live or work in New South Wales; and
• Be aged 15 years or older; and
• No longer be at school or equivalent; and
• Provide the College with your USI at the time of enrolment (admin staff can assist you in obtaining a USI

Most NSW residents are eligible for the above government subsidised fee!**

• Concession: $2,950
• Early Bird: $2,750 (deposit to be received by 23 June 2023)

Payment Plan
Course fees are paid in instalments scheduled throughout the duration of the course. Fee schedules for individual courses are outlined on the enrolment paperwork available through the college administration team.

USI

From the 1st of January 2015, any student enrolling in an Accredited Training course will be required to obtain a USI. The USI helps to keep your training records and results together in an online account which is controlled by you. You can logon to the USI website here and follow the simple instructions online to create your USI. This then needs to be provided to the College at the time of enrolment.

Important Information

Once your enrolment is completed you will receive a confirmation email. This email will be your receipt and inform you of the dates, time and venue of your course, it will also let you know of anything you need to take to class with you. Please make sure that you give us a valid email address and mobile number as any course changes will be communicated via sms or email.
